The ‘Shakespeare for Pleasure’ group has members who joined as complete beginners, often having hated Shakespeare at school, as well as those who already had experience of many of the plays when joining the group. Whatever your previous experience you will be guaranteed a warm welcome and soon grow in confidence. All you need is an interest in finding out more about Shakespeare. Please note: no member is ever expected to read aloud, or answer questions, unless they wish to do so, so set aside those bad memories of school.
In April 2026 the group will be beginning a study of Shakespeare’s 'The Winter’s Tale', an entertaining and uplifting romantic fairy tale. Activities will include watching the 1981 BBC television production, directed by the late Jonathan Miller, and comparing it with scenes from more recent productions. Throughout members will have the opportunity to discuss the play with reference to themes which explore the corrosive power of irrational jealousy and the healing power of forgiveness. The group’s reaction to the play’s magical, redemptive ending will no doubt spark some interesting debate.
The group meets at the leader's home at 10 a.m. usually on every second Monday of the month.
Although currently full there is, at present, nobody on the waiting list.
Please follow the Group email link to contact the group leader and find out more.
